Valves are a very important piece of equipment for your domestic plumbing system and come in varying shapes and sizes. Below is a glossary of just some of them, their names and what they do:

Thermostatic Radiator Valve. (TRV).

This valve provides control of the water flow through the radiators in your home using a thermostat fitted inside. The temperature of the water dictates the action of the valve as set by the homeowner and is a great way of controlling individual rooms according to their use, which can save wasted heat and money. Butterfly Valve.

This valve has a disc fitted inside, which is exactly the same diameter as the pipe in which it sits. The disc then connects to a lever which adjusts the water as it flows through.

Globe Valve.
These valves have a shaft on which something called a stopper sits, this moves up or down to allow the water to flow. Usually used when the flow needs regular adjustment. A Hither Green Plumber fits and maintains these type of valves.

Stop.

These valves are the best type of valve to fit within a system that requires a great deal of water pressure and is usually the valve that is used to stop the water from entering the home and is normally at the front of the property in order to access easily.

Gate.

Nearly always found in systems that have a straight direction of flow. It is also known as a sluice valve. It can be operated by either raising or lowering a wedge fitted to the shaft of the valve with a wheel on top to help to turn it.
